Environmental Programs in District 31

Goal #1: Reduce

Field and Winkelman:

  • Reduced paper usage for communication through use of the District's website, Enews parent email and Edline information website. School news from teachers is posted on Edline.

District:

  • Reduced paper/plastic usage - density decrease in paper towels and plastic trash can liners.
  • Reduced paper usage by encouraging use of double-sided copies.
  • Reduced paper usage by scanning documents and emailing them.

Goal #2: Reuse

Field:

  • Reuse shoes through "Share Your Soles" shoe donation drive
  • Reuse coats through 6th grade winter coat drive
  • Reuse cell phones through Cell Phone Donation Program sponsored by a student club

Winkelman:

  • Garden Compost Pile Project by 3rd grade classes
  • Reuse materials for Art class projects.
  • Reuse old gym shoes by donating them to Nike playground resurfacing program.

District:

  • District has purchased refurbished off lease laptop and desktop computers for school use.
  • District uses refurbished toner and ink in our laser and inkjet printers.
  • Unused student school supplies collected at the end of the school for use in upcoming school year.

Goal #3: Recycle

Field:

  • 6th Grade coordinates the school's recycling program
  • Lunch Room recycling of cans/bottles and kitchen grease

Winkelman

  • School-wide recycling program with recycling bins in every class
  • Art materials recycling

District

  • The District works with various recycling companies who use environmental standards to dispose of our old computers and equipment.

Parent Teacher Club

  • Sponsors toner cartridge recycling program

Goal #4: Develop Environmental Awareness Programs

District Green Team:

  • "Be Seen Going Green" 2009 Initiative - Family Green Goals
  • "How Green Are You" Survey - April 2010
  • Installation of "No Car Idling" signs and distribution of fact sheet - April 2010

Parent Teacher Club

  • Environmental Tote and Lunch Bag Initiative - 2009-2010 school year
  • Funded the "Ricky Recycle" Cultural Arts Assembly at Winkelman - December 2009

District:

  • The District is a partner in the community-wide environmental initiative "Go Green Glenview" with the village, school districts, the park district, library, township and other governement and community organizations.
  • Information about initiatives communicated through newsletters and website, as well as local media.

Field:

  • 6th Grade Environmental Unit in Science Class

Winkelman:

  • 3rd Grade Environmental Unit in Science Lab
  • 5th Grade Pollution Unit in Science Lab

Goal #5: Encourage "Green" Operating Policies

District:

  • The District was recognized with the Gold Level Green Cleaning Stewardship Award from the Schools of Illinois Public Cooperative. The award recognizes District 31 as one of the first 10 suburban school districts in the state to receive the top rated gold level of compliance with the Illinois Green Cleaning Act.
  • Reflective roof and airlocks at Field School
  • Energy efficient lighting at both schools
  • Heating and cooling systems are computer controlled for energy savings
  • Bus idling limitations
  • Timers in halls to turn off lights
  • Thermopane windows
