- 6th Grade Conflict Resolution Class Project - “Kids have the Right to Write” Pen Drive for Afghanistan:
“Kids have the Right to Write” is the theme for a pen and pencil drive for kids in Afghanistan, sponsored by Sandi Newman’s sixth grade Conflict Resolution class. The Field students learned about Afghan students’ need for pens from Sergeant First Class Kevin Guyot with the U.S. Army National Guard who recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan and came to speak to the Field class. SFC Guyot told the students that the number one request our soldiers get from the children in various villages is for the pens or pencils they carry in a pocket on their uniform sleeve. He told them Afghan children have trouble getting writing tools, although they have access to workbooks and paper.
Field students responded to this need by initiating the pen drive. SFC Guyot is assisting their effort by arranging a partnership with the Field students and the Nangarhar PRT (Provisional Reconstruction Team), the multi-U.S. military unit in Jalalabad to which he was previously assigned in Afghanistan. Pens and pencils will be collected at Field through January. SFC Guyot will see to it that the donations reach his former unit. These soldiers will personally place them in the hands of the Afghan students and will take photos to send back to Field. Community members are also welcome to contribute pens and pencils in this drive and can drop off their donations in the Field School office.
- Fall Service Learning Class
Field offered a Service Learning class in the fall for eighth graders that combined Applied Technology and Family and Consumer Science projects. The focus of the class was for students to use the woodworking and sewing skills they learn to create projects that are donated to service organizations. At the beginning of the school year, the students researched various service organizations and selected three charities for their projects this fall. The class is co-taught by Dave Kondela, Applied Technology teacher, and Kim Kiraly, Family and Consumer Science teacher.
Half of the students in the class worked on the Applied Technology side to make wooden toys for children served by "My Stuff Bags Foundation." The foundation provides bags of toys for children who are removed from homes for placement in foster care on an emergency basis. This foundation is located in California and provides the service to children and agencies in many areas of the country.
On the Family and Consumer Science side of the class, two groups of students worked on two different projects. One group worked on creating blankets and hats for the Infant Intensive Care Unit at Northshore University Hospital in Evanston. The second group was involved in sewing and creating drawstring school backpacks for the Gisimba orphanage in Kigali City, Rwanda.
