Languages
The district’s population is multicultural and students come from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. According to the Illinois State Board of Education Fall Housing Report, there are 21 languages besides English that are spoken in their homes including Amharic, Arabic, Assyrian (Syriac, Aramaic), Bulgarian, Cantonese, Croatian, Farsi, Greek, Gujarati, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Malayalam, Mandarin, Panjabi, Pilipino, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian.
Many of these students and their families are new to the United States and the students need language assistance from the District’s programs in English Language Learner (ELL) program and Bilingual Education. To provide assistance for the Korean students, a social worker from Korean American Community Services works in the schools one day a week to help bridge the gap between school and home.
Service Learning Programs
As part of the curriculum, District 31 schools incorporate service learning programs at all grade levels.
Through Winkelman School’s LifeSmarts Program and Student Council, students sponsor canned good drives for local food pantries; send “care package” gifts to U.S. service men and women in Iraq; make holiday cookies and decorations for seniors, hospital patients, homeless shelters and other people in need in the community throughout the year; and participate in other community service projects.
Field School has been named a National Service Learning Leader School. At Field, students sponsor programs to raise money for a number of worthy causes throughout the year. Students also sponsor drives to collect coats and food for those in need. Of special note is the seventh grade intergenerational program with local senior citizens. Seventh graders invite the seniors to the school to learn how to use computers and the Internet, celebrate Veterans Day at a special assembly, and participate in classroom projects and discussions with them.
