Winkelman School, recognized with a Blue Ribbon Award in 2000-2001, serves approximately 550 kindergarten through fifth grade students. The school in its current location opened in 1979 and a new wing was added in 2002. Winkelman features more than 30 classrooms, a gymnasium, a learning center, a commons area, two art rooms, two music rooms and a computer laboratory. The Winkelman Community Garden on the southeast side of the building was planted by students and staff in May 2004 and will be expanded in spring 2005. The newest school feature is the gym's traverse climbing wall funded by the Parent Teacher Club and Student Council in January 2005. Winkelman collaborates with Medallion School Partnerships to offer a half-day, tuition based kindergarten enrichment program in addition to its regular half-day kindergarten program.
