Board of Education Overview
The Board of Education is composed of seven District 31 residents who are elected in non-partisan elections and serve unsalaried four-year terms.
The Board is responsible for interpreting the educational needs and desires of the people and for translating them into policies and programs that are implemented by the school administration. All seven Board Members have successfully completed the required professional development leadership training required by Illinois School Code ICS 5/10-16a. Allison Slade Rothstein, Ed.D, a Northbrook native and resident, is serving in her first term on the Board. Over the past 25 years, Dr. Slade has served as a teacher, professional developer, school leader and coach and curriculum designer in urban and suburban settings, including being the founder of Namaste Charter School in Chicago. Dr. Slade also spent several years as a University Professor in Educational Leadership, supervising and supporting aspiring principals, and as a consultant and strategic advisor to many education organizations. Currently, Dr. Slade serves as the Director of Student Services at the North Cook Regional Office of Education supporting 39 districts (227 schools) in attendance and truancy, building Alternative Learning Opportunties Programs across the region and supervising and supporting the Regional Safe School. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies from Washington University in St. Louis, her master’s degree in Education Policy from the University of Chicago as a McCormick Tribune Fellow and her principal & superintendent certification and Doctor of Education degree from National Louis University. She has two daughters, one in seventh grade at Field and one in fifth grade at Winkelman Elementary. |

Nick Parfitt, a Northbrook resident, is currently the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Stern Pinball, and has enjoyed a successful career in various finance and business roles in and around Chicagoland manufacturing and consumer packaged goods companies. Born and raised just outside of Johannesburg, South Africa, Mr. Parfitt moved to the United States in the early 2000s to complete a business degree at Indiana University. He and his family have been heavily involved with the District 31 Education Foundation, fundraisers, and activities for many years. Mr. Parfitt has been serving on the TrueNorth APS board for almost two years, representing District 31 to advocate and shape the strategy for special education programs. He will serve as the Board Vice President and be the board representative to TrueNorth. Nick and his wife Laurie have been a part of District 31 for about ten years since their daughter, now a freshman at GBN, started at Winkelman. They also have two sons currently at Winkelman School. As a family, they enjoy bowling, traveling, swimming, and park district sports. When not on the field, Nick and Laurie enjoy theater as subscribers to “Broadway in Chicago” and often pair shows with visits to new and interesting restaurants in downtown Chicago. |

Meghan McMillin, a Glenview resident, is serving her first term on the Board. She serves as the Board Secretary.
Mrs. McMillin served on the executive board of the PTO for the past three years, including the past two as Co-President. She is a Registered Dietitian and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and owns a private practice. Mrs. McMillin holds a Master’s of Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has a son in Kindergarten and a daughter in third grade, both at Winkelman. |

Dr. Laura Sanchez-Greenberg, a Northbrook resident, is currently serving her third term on the Board. Sanchez-Greenberg earned her BS in Marketing at Northern Illinois University and her MBA from the University of Chicago Booth Graduate school of business. She holds a doctorate from Benedictine University in Values Based Leadership, with an area of study in and high performing organizations. She has also served on the Northern Illinois Girl Scouts Board. Greenberg is a Founding Partner of Verde Associates, an organizational development firm. She and her husband have a graduate of District 31, a 7th grader, and 3rd grader. |

Jeffrey Steres, a Northbrook resident, is currently serving his second term on the Board. He represents the Board on the Stakeholder Financial Advisory Committee. Mr. Steres earned his BS in Computer Science at the University of Michigan and his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is a Technology Executive in the Quick Service Restaurant industry. Mr. Steres has a daughter at Glenbrook North High School and a daughter in eighth grade at Field. |

Darrin Stern joined the Board of Education on April, 27, 2023, replacing former Board of Education Member Meredith Estes. As a small business owner, Mr. Stern has extensive experience in strategic planning, budgeting, and project management. He also has deep ties in the community through his volunteerism and community engagement. In 2009, Mr. Stern founded a non-profit organization, the Chicago Clean Energy Alliance, and served as the president from 2011 to 2013. In 2016, Mr. Stern joined the District 31 Education Foundation and served as the Co-Chair for the Winter Benefit. In 2017, he served as President. During his tenure, the Education Foundation raised money to complete Maker Spaces, funded improvements for outdoor play areas, and reinstituted direct teacher grants. |

Noah Frank, a Northbrook resident and North Shore native, is serving his first term on the Board. Mr. Frank is an attorney. He earned his JD, Master’s in Human Resources, Bachelors’ in Economics and History from the University of Illinois. He is married, and their two sons attend Winkelman. |
