Board of Education Overview
The Board of Education is comprised of seven District 31 residents who are elected in non-partisan elections and serve unsalaried four-year terms.
The Board is responsible for interpreting the educational needs and desires of the people and for translating them into policies and programs that are implemented by the school administration. All seven Board Members have successfully completed the required professional development leadership training required by Illinois School Code ICS 5/10-16a. Allison Slade Rothstein, Ed.D, a Northbrook native and resident, is serving in her first term on the Board. Over the past 25 years, Dr. Slade has served as a teacher, professional developer, school leader and coach and curriculum designer in urban and suburban settings, including being the founder of Namaste Charter School in Chicago. Dr. Slade is currently the Director of Instructional Leadership & Strategic Initiatives for Roosevelt University, and a consultant and strategic advisor to many education organizations. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies from Washington University in St. Louis, her master’s degree in Education Policy from the University of Chicago as a McCormick Tribune Fellow and her principal & superintendent certification and Doctor of Education degree from National Louis University. She has two daughters, one in seventh grade at Field and one in fifth grade at Winkelman Elementary. aslade@district31.net |

Laura Sanchez-Greenberg, a Northbrook resident, is currently serving her third term on the Board. She represents the Board as the liasion to ED RED. Committee Sanchez-Greenberg earned her BS in Marketing at Northern Illinois University and her MBA from the University of Chicago Booth Graduate school of business. She has also served on the Northern Illinois Girl Scouts Board. Greenberg is a the Founding Partner of Verde Associates, an organizational development firm. She is PhD Candidate in the study of leadership and high performing organizations. She has a son at Glenbrook North High School, and seventh and third grade sons in the District. |

Daphne Frank, a Northbrook resident, is serving her second term on the Board. She serves on the Calendar and Policy Committee. She is a swim coach for Glenbrook Swim Club in Northbrook and worked for Athletico for six years. Mrs. Frank is a graduate of Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine. She has a son and daughter at Glenbrook North High School. dfrank@district31.net |

Jeffrey Steres, a Northbrook resident, is currently serving his second term on the Board. He represents the Board on the Stakeholder Financial Advisory Committee. Mr. Steres earned his BS in Computer Science at the University of Michigan and his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is a Technology Executive at Popeyes/ Restaurant Brands International. Mr. Steres has a daughter at Glenbrook North High School and a daughter in seventh grade at Field. |

Melissa Choo Valentinas, a Glenview resident, is serving her second term on the Board. She serves as the Board Representative to the PTO and the Education Foundation. Mrs. Valentinas also served on the executive board of the PTO for the past five years and previously served as the School Board President. Valentinas is an attorney and currently works as an executive coach and strategic management consultant. She is a graduate of Connecticut College and the University of Illinois College of Law. She has three children, two sons at Glenbrook South High School and a daughter in third grade at Winkelman. mcvalentinas@district31.net |

Dr. Maria J. Vasilopoulos, a Northbrook resident, is currently completing her first term on the Board of education. She has served as District 31's School Board representative for The Illinois Association of School Boards. She currently serves on D31's Safety Committee and Facilities Committee. Dr. Vasilopoulos earned her B.A. in Mathematics from Northwestern University, her M.S. Ed. in School Administration from Northwestern University and her Doctoral degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Educational Psychology from Loyola University. She has over 25 years experience in education and school administration. She currently serves as the Instructional Supervisor for Mathematics at Glenbrook North High School. Dr. Vasilopoulos lives with her husband and two children, a fourth grader and second grader. |

Meredith Estes, a Glenview resident, is currently serving her first term on the Board. Mrs. Estes earned her BA in English and French at Lake Forest College and her MS in Public Administration from DePaul University. Mrs. Estes is a preschool teacher at Glenview Community Church Nursery School. She also volunteers as a Girl Scout Troop Leader and as a member of her Church Board. Mrs. Estes has a daughter in eighth grade at Field and twin daughters in fourth grade at Winkelman. mestes@district31.net |
