Welcome to Winkelman School, a kindergarten-grade 5 school of approximately 600 students located in West Northfield SD 31.  Winkelman’s staff is committed to working with parents and students collaboratively to best meet the needs of our students.  Students participate in language arts and math classes each day.  Social studies standards are woven into the language arts literacy block.  In grades K-2, students are taught science by their homeroom teacher and in grades 3-5 students are pulled out for science instruction with a science endorsed teacher trained in the Next Generation Science Standards.  We provide innovative instruction that engages students in thinking critically about their reading, writing and problem solving. In addition to our core academic programs, we offer a daily physical education program that is designed to promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy habits as well as lessons in music twice a week, art weekly, and our social-emotional literacy programs: Foundations and Champs.  Our program is comprehensive and focused on developing the whole child.  In an effort to help all students reach their full potential, we have a large and diverse staff dedicated to meeting their needs.  Our staff at Winkelman uses proactive universal prevention strategies to create a positive learning environment for students.  Our positive climate and culture focuses on allowing students to grow through their mistakes.  It also allows them to learn from the consequences of their choices.  In addition to excellent classroom teachers, we have a talented staff that includes multiple learning resource teachers and reading specialists, a social worker, a school psychologist, numerous Bilingual and ELL teachers, and speech and language pathologists.  Instructional assistants are also assigned to support students in various classrooms, the lunchroom and playground.  Recently, Winkelman adopted a new technology program instituting 1:1 iPad devices for students in grades 3-5 and 2:1 iPads in grades K-2.

We are fortunate to enjoy tremendous support from our parents and community.  Our Parent Teacher Club (PTC) is an active group throughout the building that provides enrichment opportunities for our students.  Our Education Foundation supports District 31 by raising funds to bring new learning experiences into the buildings as well as purchase enhanced resources. Winkelman is a positive learning community where everyone is committed to working together for the success of all students. We are extremely proud of our school and know you’ll be impressed by what you experience.  If you have any questions or would like to contact me, please email me at dtamez@district31.net.
