Dr. Alexandra Nicholson has served as Superintendent of Schools for West Northfield School District 31 since July 1, 2007. She joined District 31 after 31 years of experience in education. Superintendent Nicholson began her career as a classroom teacher and acting principal in Tinley Park Community Consolidated School District 146 teaching grades 1, 2, 5 and 6 for 11 years. She then served as a principal in Park Ridge Niles Community Consolidated School District 64 for eight years, as an educational consultant for Strategic Studies for one year, and as a principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent for Niles Elementary School District 71 for 11 years, bringing her total experience in education to 39 years.
Superintendent Nicholson earned her Bachelor of Arts from St. Xavier College in Oak Lawn, Illinois, with a double major of education and psychology as well as certificates in K-9 teaching, 6-12 teaching, and family studies. She earned her Master of Science in Education from Purdue University with a concentration in Administration and Supervision as well as Illinois and Indiana K-12 administrative certificates. Superintendent Nicholson completed her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Illinois superintendent certification from National Louis University. Dr. Nicholson earned all college and graduate level degrees with honors.
Under Dr. Nicholson's leadership, improvements have included but have not been limited to the development of the District's first and second formal Strategic Plans and first formal Five-Year Technology Plan which resulted in one-to-one student technology, Common Core math, Common Core English language arts, Next Generation Science, Spanish and Korean bilingual programs, a new middle school program, full-day kindergarten, and a blended pre-school program. Dr. Nicholson is directly responsible for the Board of Education, administrative evaluations, personnel, parent and community relations, legal matters, municipal partnerships, strategic planning, union relations, as well as overseeing curriculum, instruction, student assessment, and educational programming. She also is responsible to oversee facility management, policy development, professional development, District finances, school management, special education, student services and more. Dr. Nicholson played a major role in the passing of District 31's educational referendum.
Superintendent Nicholson has lived in Park Ridge, Illinois, for the past 20 years. She is the mother of two daughters, Alexis and Melina. Alexis is a graduate of George Washington University in Washington DC, where she studied international politics, and is now employed by New York University as its Global Studies Coordinator.
Dr. Nicholson has a passion for education. As Superintendent of West Northfield School District 31, she considers it a privilege to serve the communities of Northbrook and Glenview. She believes that children are the world's greatest resource, and that it is her mission in life to lead high quality educational services that prepare every child for tomorrow's world by working with staff, parents, and the community to inspire the minds of students and build their futures.
