District June 2025 Newsletter

West Northfield School District 31

June 6, 2025

Dear District 31 Community,

As we conclude another successful school year, I want to reflect on our many accomplishments and express my sincere gratitude to all who have been part of this journey.

First, I’d like to recognize our outstanding students. You have demonstrated incredible growth, curiosity, and resilience. A special congratulations to our eighth-grade graduates — your hard work and dedication have brought you to this important milestone, and we are excited to see what your futures hold.

This year would not have been possible without the support of our parents, volunteers, and PTO. Whether assisting in classrooms, organizing events, or offering daily encouragement at home, your partnership has greatly enriched our school community. Thank you for your time and commitment.

I also want to extend my deepest appreciation to our teachers and staff. Your passion and dedication have been truly inspiring, and your work continues to make a lasting impact on our students.

We also thank and send our best wishes to our departing administrators, Meg Knapik, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. April Miller, Principal of Field Middle School. Their leadership and service have had a lasting impact, and we wish them continued success. Learn more about our leadership team for the 2025-2026 school year here

As we head into summer, I encourage everyone to take time to rest, recharge, and spend quality time with family and friends. Thank you for a wonderful year. I look forward to all we will accomplish together in the year ahead and wish you a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable summer!

Dr. Erin K. Murphy
Superintendent

Congratulations Retiree

Congratulations to Dave DelBoccio, Manager of Technology and Network Security, who will be retiring at the end of June. Dave DelBoccio leaves with decades of dedicated service to District 31 and the technology department. Under his leadership, District 31 has remained at the forefront of educational technology, from building our wireless infrastructure to implementing a 1:1 device model and ensuring every staff member has access to updated devices. Dave also focused on advancing our district’s cybersecurity practices. We are grateful for his contributions and wish him the best as he begins his well-deserved retirement.

Congratulations 8th Grade Graduates
Special congratulations to the Field Middle School Class of 2025! Our 8th Graders enjoyed the last few weeks of school with a parade at Winkelman, a graduation breakfast, and a beautiful graduation ceremony. You can view the 2025 graduation photos on our District Facebook page. We are very proud of our Tigers and wish them the best of luck in high school next year! Thank you to all of the parents who planned the fabulous party and luncheon, and to the staff for making their 8th-grade year so memorable.

Congratulations, Winkelman 5th Graders
Congratulations to Winkelman's class of 2025!  Students enjoyed the annual Farewell to Fifth celebration. The afternoon included a field trip and a parade through the school. Thank you to the fifth-grade teachers and staff, as well as the PTO, for their support of the event. Many thanks also to all the Winkelman staff and parent/guardian volunteers for making this day possible! View photos on our District Facebook page

Illinois Secretary of State, Alexi Giannoulias, Visits Field Middle School

Field Middle School was honored to welcome Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias for a special assembly with our 6th–8th grade students. Secretary Giannoulias spoke about his role in government, the importance of leadership, civic engagement, and giving back to the community. Students asked thoughtful questions, showing their curiosity and enthusiasm for public service. The visit was extra special as Secretary Giannoulias was introduced by his nieces, current Field students Gia and Ambri, and shared his own family connections to Field. Thank you to Secretary Giannoulias for inspiring our students!

Summer Learning Opportunities

Math at Home
Are you looking for fun, grade-appropriate ways to keep your kids engaged in math learning over the summer? Check out the K-5 Ways to Support Your Child’s Math Learning. Greg Tang Math is also offering a Summer Math Challenge for students who have finished grades K-6, which includes downloadable game boards with grade-appropriate math games and puzzles.

Literacy at Home
Summer is an ideal time to continue developing the literacy skills learned throughout the school year in engaging ways. Our Literacy Coordinator & Coach, Ms. Redmond, has curated some easy ways to Support Literacy at Home. For personalized book recommendations for any age, check out Read Brightly. They also have suggested summer reading lists for different age groups of children:

Northbrook and Glenview Public Library
Both the Glenview and Northbrook Public Libraries have waived non-resident fees for children ages 18 and younger. Students living in unincorporated Glenview and Northbrook are eligible for FREE library cards. Students can obtain or renew a library card through the District 31 registration process, or parents or guardians can visit the Northbrook or Glenview Public Library with their child and present a valid Illinois state photo ID. All students are also eligible to participate in the summer reading programs below. Happy reading!

Presentations and Discussion Items:

  • Nicole Schramm, Director of Finance and Operations, presented the tentative budget for the 2025-2026 school year.  Any updates will be presented at the June and August meetings.  A public hearing will be scheduled before formal approval in September.
  • The Board of Education discussed the future of District 31’s membership in True North Educational Cooperative 804. Given that most, if not all, member districts are expected to submit their intent to withdraw, the Board agreed to place an action item on the June Board of Education meeting agenda to authorize District 31’s own intent to withdraw. This action would initiate a six-month window for the district to conduct a thorough review of its programs, explore future service models, and assess the broader impact of other member districts’ withdrawals on the cooperative as a whole. This action would signal District 31’s intent to explore withdrawal, but a final vote would be required at the end of the six-month review process to confirm or change course.
  • Director of Finance and Operations, Nicole Schramm, reviewed the Monthly Financial Reports for April.
  • The Board of Education reviewed the Superintendent Report
  • The Board of Education previewed the policies recommended for approval at its June meeting.
  • The Board of Education agreed to move the June Board of Education meeting to Monday, June 23, 2025.

The Board of Education made the following approvals:

  • Approved Lauren Lipsey as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the 2025-2026 School Year
