Student Support Services Update

The Student Services Department recently held a parent advisory group. The District would like to highlight some areas in which the Student Support Services team can assist and how parents can positively advocate for the needs of their child.

If you suspect your child is having learning difficulties or social emotional concerns:

  • Reach out to his teacher, principal, case manager or to the Director of Student Supports.
  • Inform your point of contact of your concerns and ask for further information.
  • Follow-up in writing include the following: date, concerns and/ or questions you have about your child’s academic performance or social emotional learning and what you are hoping to accomplish through the correspondence.
  • Please direct the letter to the Principal and copy the teacher, school psychologist and Director of Student Services on this written communication.
  • The school team will follow up in writing regarding next steps.

Next steps may include the following, but are not limited to: 

  • A meeting to continue to problem solve to determine possible interventions.
  • Consent for an evaluation.
  • You may receive a correspondence responding to your questions and concerns with no further actions required.
  • Once you send a letter to your school team requesting an evaluation or follow up regarding a concern, you should receive information in 14 days regarding next steps. In order for a student to be eligible for special education services under the 13 disability categories listed in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, there must be an adverse impact on a student’s education and a need for specially designed instruction. In order for a student to be eligible under a 504, a student must have a disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
