Parent Education Series, School and Community Dashboard, Subs Needed, Equity Audit, and More

October 9, 2020

Dear District 31 Parent/Guardian Community,

As the leaves turn and the air becomes brisk, it is a good time to remind everyone that it takes our entire community to keep everyone healthy.  We appreciate the ongoing communication when students are ill, strict adherence to quarantines, and information about any testing.  It is communication and awareness of the 3 w’s (wear a mask, wash your hands, and watch your distance) that will help our community during this time.  It is also essential to adhere to the Cook County Department of Public Health Travel Warnings.  If your child travels to one of the identified states, they must quarantine for 14 days before returning to school. We appreciate the communication and collaboration to keep our community safe.

Parent Education Series
I am very excited about the next parent education series on technology, which is now scheduled for Wednesday, October 28 (SEE DATE CHANGE) at 7 p.m.  The title is, “How to Help Our Kids Thrive in a Digital World.”  Distance learning is a huge adjustment for everyone. Devorah Heitner, PhD, an expert on young people’s relationship with digital media and technology, will share practical advice and tips to help your kids succeed in this new digital classroom. She’ll also discuss how parents can make this all a little easier on ourselves, too. Devorah Heitner, author of Screenwise, explains the importance of “mentoring over monitoring” when it comes to kids’ tech use and gives advice on how to encourage a healthy relationship with media and technology – and set kids up for success, not stress, in the digital age.  The zoom to view this presentation  can be found here.

Updated School and Community Dashboards
At the September Board of Education meeting, a school and community dashboard for health monitoring was introduced.  This dashboard is updated every Tuesday using the previous week’s data.  Here is the updated dashboard for this week.

Substitutes Urgently Needed
Like most of the districts around us, we are in urgent need of individuals willing to come into the schools and be part of our sub pool.  Please check out this informational flyer or contact one of the principals.  We are looking for the following to fill out our sub pool:

  • Permanent sub - a guaranteed sub job every day at Field and/or Winkelman.  Become part of our school community.
  • Regular Substitute - Sub when it fits into your schedule!
  • Supervisors - Come help in classrooms, hallways, lunch and recess.  Permanent and flexible options available.  Perfect for a college student studying from home for the semester.

Equity Audit Information
Read About the Equity Audit: Korean      Mongolean      Spanish

District 31 will be participating in an equity audit for the purpose of obtaining baseline information on our efforts to advance equity for all students. The audit allows for a comprehensive collection of qualitative and quantitative data to assist in supporting students, staff, and families. Research studies have indicated equity audits allow for revelations of  “equity and inequity and plans for improvement.” Dr. Ivette Dubiel, executive director of the Dupage Region Office of Education’s Center for Equity and Professional Learning will be conducting this audit.

Parents are invited to participate in small focus group discussions for the purpose of the audit. Each focus group will consist of 8-10 parents with the external auditor Dr. Dubiel. During the focus group, parents will be asked a limited number of questions to share your experience as a Field and/or Winkelman parent in District 31.  The responses are confidential. The District hopes to gain insights from families to make our school better for all. There will be several groups (all virtual via Zoom)  running during the day and evening to accommodate parent/guardian schedules as best as possible, as well as sessions with Korean, Mongolian, and Spanish translators.
