Free Meal Update, Updated School and Community Dashboards, COVID-19 Testing Update, Board of Education Meeting, and More
October 16, 2020
Dear District 31 Parent/Guardian Community,
Thank you to all the parents who attended parent teacher conferences this week. We are looking forward to a second night of conferences on Monday night. Please contact your school office if you still need to sign up!
Important Free Meal Update
Thank you for your patience as we iron out the kinks in our school lunch program. If your child attends in-person, EVERY Friday they can bring home a bag that will have two lunches and SEVEN breakfasts to eat for the whole week. As a result, Field and Winkelman will no longer serve breakfast in the morning in the building. This Friday, because there is no school on Monday, students will receive an extra lunch in their take-home bag. Remote families can still pick up their weeks worth of meals (7 lunches/7 breakfasts) on Monday at GBS. Meal drop off will also take place on Monday for remote families who have elected this option.
Updated School and Community Dashboards - Area Metrics are ticking up
As we move into mid-October, it continues to be important to monitor our school and community health dashboards. Maintaining safety and supervision is key to continuing in-person instruction. In the last week, all but one of our twelve metrics has increased within our Northfield Township COVID-19 Elementary School Local Public Health Dashboard. Region 10’s weekly cases per 100K residents returned to the substantial level. Although eight of our twelve metrics remain within the minimal designation, several others could shift to the moderate or substantial level in the coming weeks. Northfield Township Superintendents spoke with the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) earlier this week to gain their insights and advice. CCDPH’s recommendation is to continue our current operations as we monitor these metrics over the next two to three weeks. They noted that Region 10 remains in the “minimal transmission” or “blue” designation from the Illinois Department of Public Health. They also recommended that we continue to monitor operations within each of our schools.
In addition, we continue to have a critical need for substitutes if we want to stay open. Please check out this informational flyer or contact one of the principals. We are looking for the following to fill out our sub pool:
- Permanent sub - a guaranteed sub job every day at Field and/or Winkelman. Become part of our school community.
- Regular Substitute - Sub when it fits into your schedule!
- Supervisors - Come help in classrooms, hallways, lunch and recess. Permanent and flexible options available. Perfect for a college student studying from home for the semester.

What can I do to help prevent an adaptive pause?
Continue to follow all the recommendations of the IDPH and CDC. It is important to follow all safety protocols at school and at home to keep everyone safe. Please continue to commit to our risk-mitigation efforts inside and outside of school, including hand hygiene, wearing masks, and maintaining social distancing as we avoid touching our faces. As we continue to navigate this global pandemic together, we are each responsible for the level of risk we bring into our school community. Let’s continue to react to the risks of COVID-19 responsibly. Please also follow the Cook County Department of Public Health Travel guidance. Click here for more information.
Also, please continue to help the District promote our open substitute positions or consider becoming a sub. Learn more at www.district31.net/BecomeASub.
COVID-19 Testing Update
The Illinois Department of Public Health released new testing guidance that will be used moving forward. Per the guidance, a negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test is needed to return to school for those with confirmed or suspected COVID-19. A negative test received using Rapid Testing is no longer accepted. View the updated guidance here.
Board of Education Meeting - Thursday, October 22
Our next regular meeting of the Board of Education is Thursday, October 22 at 7 p.m. The agenda, board packet information, and links for viewing and public comments will be posted shortly here. A reminder email with the link will be sent out next week. We welcome all members of our community to attend the Board Meeting in person in the Field learning center or virtually.

The PTO Presents Halloween!
Halloween is on the way! Field students will enjoy activities planned by the student council, and the PTO has created Spooky Spirit Week for all of Winkelman to enjoy. Get ready to take photos for the yearbook at a special scene on the school's front lawn (celebrity sightings Saturday, October 24, from noon until 3 p.m.!), enter a workspace station decorating contest with your class, dance like Frankenstein, eat fang-tastic treats that you (or your adults) make at home, and so much more! EVERYTHING can be done no matter where you learn! Happy Halloween from the PTO! Click here for more info!

Ed Foundation and PTO Appreciation Fundraiser
The Education Foundation and the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) have joined forces to show our district employees how much we appreciate their efforts. This dedicated team of District 31 works countless hours to ensure that our children receive clean, safe, and quality education.
On Monday, October 26, all district employees (in school and remote) will receive a DQ sundae to show our appreciation for their dedication and hard work. Many thanks to Brandi Argentar for leading this initiative and to the amazing support of our district families who have already funded our October appreciation gift.
All monies received in support of this campaign will be used to fund appreciation efforts throughout the year. Additional funds raised will be applied to future staff appreciation gifts with a goal of providing a little treat every month. The more we can raise together, the more we can show the District 31 employees how much we value them!
