Adaptive Pause, Travel Advisory Update, Stay at Home Advisory, Updated School Calendar, and More

November 13, 2020

Dear District 31 Parent/Guardians,

I know there are still so many questions and concerns, as well as much apprehension, as we transition to an “adaptive pause.”  I appreciate all of the well-thought-out communication I have received in support of the pause or with questions and concerns.  I have been impressed with everyone’s desire to understand, the desire to support the collective good, and the musings about what we can do together to return to the “normal” of the past few months as soon as possible.

I encourage everyone to adhere to the stay-at-home advisory to the greatest degree possible and per the guidelines. I know that the information is ever-changing and coming fast and furious, but we need collective responsibility as a community to adhere to these guidelines to keep our families safe.  Please also be aware that the Cook County Department of Public Health Travel Advisories have been updated, and ALL travel outside of Illinois is now subject to a 14 day quarantine.  In an effort to promote safety, North Shore Hospitals have asked people to become Safety Ambassadors. We encourage you to talk this over with your families and take the pledge. District 31 continues to review our COVID-19 dashboard, the Northfield Township dashboard, and suburban Cook County metrics as we monitor health conditions.

We realize that our school calendar has changed MANY times this school year.  An updated school calendar is available here. We have also created a simplified version that covers the next few months of school below.

The Board of Education will hold their regular meeting on Thursday, November 19 at 7 p.m.  You can find the agendas, viewing links and public comment form here. All are welcome to attend. One of the positive outcomes of the last months is the level of community engagement that has happened as our Board meetings have moved to a virtual setting.  In fact, as I was walking through Winkelman today, one of our young students exclaimed, “I know you. You are the lady on the zoom meetings that talk about schools. My whole family watches!”

There has been an avalanche of information already---and I am guessing much more to come.  Here are some handy links to help you navigate all of this information. And, as always, please reach out to the administrative team if you have any questions.

Student Service Supports
In our recent Board meeting, it was determined that our District would take an adaptive pause, and return to remote learning. However, our Board members asked Dr. Janine Gruhn, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services,  to determine if there would be a way to serve the students with greatest needs. Based on this information, Dr. Gruhn worked with her teams and determined services that can be implemented as in-person options. Learn more here.

Available Programs from the Park District and YMCA
The following programs may be helpful for District 31 families during the Adaptive Pause:

Free Meal Program
The free meal program will continue for ALL students during the District 31 adaptive pause. Details on how to access the program during the adaptive pause are available here. Please note that District 31 has already partnered with our bus company, North Shore Transit, to make weekly meal deliveries over the past month.  These established bus routes for meal drop off will continue during the adaptive pause and we are happy to include more families on these established routes. We want to support our families during this challenging time. In-person Winkelman students will continue receiving their meals at school next week.
