December 18, 2020

Dear District 31 Parents/ Guardians

Happy holidays!  Although this winter recess may look and feel different this year, the administration hopes that it is a time of peace, quiet, and rejuvenation. There is so much to look forward to on the horizon as we move into 2021.  As the news becomes filled with images of vaccines and new beginnings, we seek to continue to work together as a community to support each other and our students.  We are excited that a return to in person instruction is expected on Monday, January 11 (following one more week of remote learning).  We ask that everyone be mindful of social distancing guidelines and best practices as you contemplate your winter break plans--it takes the collective community to keep everyone safe.

Travel Guidance Update
As a reminder, in-person instruction will open on Monday, January 11. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) published a clarification on their updated quarantine guidance. The new language is available on our website at or by clicking here. Please note that the 7-day quarantine with a negative test option is only available for adults (NOT STUDENTS), and the test must be PCR test.

If you need any help figuring out what day your child should return to school after traveling or have any other quarantine questions, please contact me, your principal or your nurse and we will be happy to talk through what is needed.

If you are traveling, it is helpful for us to have the information.  We encourage you to continue to fill out this form so we can plan for smooth transitions for each of our students.

Please note that quarantine and travel guidance are continually evolving and as a result our decisions and guidance may also need to adapt and change.

Here is a handy chart of some current information for returning to school:

We traveled over winter break.  When can my student return to in-person school?

My child is  ill and/or showing a Covid symptom.  How can they return to school?

My child was in close contact with a person who has tested positive for Covid.  When can they come back to school?

You must quarantine for a minimum of ten days following travel per the CDC.

In order for your child to return to school in person on January 11, you must be home from your travels on Thursday, December 31.

Please contact the school offices if you have any questions about dates so we can assist with timing and live streaming if they are unable to return on January 11.

There are three ways to return to school.

  1. A doctor’s note providing an alternative diagnosis.
  2. A negative Covid test (PCR)
  3. After 10 days of quarantine if they are no longer showing symptoms.

Your child can come back to school after ten days, provided they are showing no symptoms.

School District 31 Spreads Holiday Cheer to Those in Need
With the approach of the winter holidays, School District 31 administration and office staff, along with teachers and staff of Field Middle School pitched in to help make the season a little brighter for those in need in our community. Generous donations poured in to provide holiday gifts for a number of district families. While necessities like clothes, coats, shoes, and boots were the first priority, it wouldn’t be the holidays without lighthearted gifts; all of the children also received toys and books from their wish lists. Gift items were wrapped and will be delivered in time for Christmas. Special thanks to Marty Frega,  Meghan Swift and Tina Nielson for helping to organize the event and to Heather Stodola, Katie Lauder, and Tania Gastelum for wrapping.
