In Person Learning Resumes 1/11, Curriculum Audit, Winter Benchmarking, and Upcoming Events

January 8, 2020

Dear District 31 Community,

It has been a somber week.  With the pandemic continuing to rage around us and turmoil in our capitol, we have now learned of a loss close to home. Glenbrook North High School has shared that one of their seniors has tragically passed away. Although not from District 31, this last year has shown how closely our Northfield Township community is intertwined and we know this loss will resonate throughout our whole community. This is a good reminder that it is important to reach out and check in with each other and our students.  Our social workers will be available to talk with any parent or student. Do not hesitate to reach out.

In-Person Learning Resumes
In-Person learning resumes on Monday, January 11. We thank you for all of  our families for strictly adhering to the travel guidance and quarantining for ten days following any out of state  travel. In order to return to school in person on Monday, you must have returned home no later than December 31. If you have any questions about whether you can return to school, please reach out to the school nurses or the school offices.

District 31 has been so proud of our ability to have a full day, in-person option since August. Although we took a pause over winter break, we are confident that we will be able to resume and continue successfully moving forward. However, we do need your help.

  • Please self certify your child every school day.
  • Please keep your child AND any sibling home if they don’t feel well and if they have any of the Covid symptoms.  Please see the chart for information for returning to school.
  • Please adhere to the travel guidance. As the Cook County Department of Public Health evolves their guidance, so will District 31.
  • As we enter back into in-person instruction, review with your child the importance of wearing masks and social distancing.
  • Thank your teachers!  Their commitment to in person instruction is inspiring and their ability to help kids follow the safety protocols has been the backbone of our success.
  • Consider being a sub!  Subs continue to be a need and our recruitment efforts are ongoing. Please click here for more information.

We thank you for your flexibility as our practices continue to evolve to meet the changing demands of the year---and we anticipate that this flexibility will continue to be important as we move forward.

D31 Curriculum Audit
In March the district began to conduct a curriculum audit in partnership with the Consortium for Educational Change.  And, like many things started in March, it was left incomplete due to the shift into remote learning.  The audit will resume in January of 2021. The purpose of the audit is to systematically evaluate curriculum instruction, and assessment structures, process and products in place. Parents have the opportunity to participate in focus groups via Zoom. The Winkelman group will take place on Wednesday, January 20 from 8:15 - 8:45 a.m.  The Field group will take place on Thursday, January 21 from 8:30 - 9:10 a.m.  Please email Becky Mathison, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction, at bmathison@district31.net by January 15 if you would like to participate.

Winter Benchmarking
The purpose of conducting regular benchmark assessment is to gather academic information about student learning and growth in order to develop targeted activities and instruction. Winter benchmarking is scheduled to begin the week of January 19. Specific schedule information will be shared by the Principals and teachers next week. Student reports will be mailed home in February. Visit the district website's assessment page for more information.
