Mr. Palanck named a Bears Champion Teacher, Calendar Survey, Board of Education Meeting, Search for New Winkelman Nurse, 5Essentials Survey, Registration, Travel Guidelines, Spirit Wear Sale, and Upcoming Events

February 19, 2021

Dear District 31 Community,

It has been a cold, snowy week, but despite the frigid temperatures and the non stop snow, we continue to see glimmers of a promising spring.  Weather trends show warming temperatures, more and more staff are moving forward with the COVID-19 vaccine, and our conversations are beginning to turn to the typical spring time staple--planning for the next school year.

The highlight of the week was watching Winkelman 3rd grade teacher Mr. Eric Palanck  be surprised by George McCasey, chairman of the Chicago Bears.  Mr. Palanck was named a Bears Champion Teacher for his dedication and commitment to his students. He was nominated by colleagues, parents, and students.  In addition to a Bears jersey and football, Mr. Palanck will receive $1000 from the Bears to spend on his classroom. District 31 is so proud of Mr. Palanck and thanks him for all that he does for his students and the whole Winkelman community.

Calendar Survey
At the November Board of Education meeting, the Board agreed on a calendar framework consisting of definite holidays and breaks. We are now ready to draft and finalize the 2021-2022 school calendar. A committee composed of administration, teachers, parents, and Board of Education members form the school calendar for the next school year based on feedback from parents and staff. Please consider giving your feedback and suggestions regarding the upcoming school calendar by filling out a brief survey here by Sunday, February 21.

Board of Education Meeting
The Board of Education will hold their regular meeting on Thursday, February 25 at 7 p.m.  You can find the agendas, viewing links and public comment form here. All are welcome to attend. One of the positive outcomes of the last months is the level of community engagement that has happened as our Board meetings have moved to a virtual setting.
