October 1, 2021
Dear District 31 Families,
Happy first day of October! This week we turn the spotlight on our custodial staff in honor of National School Custodian Day on October 2. Our custodians work behind the scenes to provide a safe and healthy environment for our students and staff. The past two years, this wonderful custodial team has played an integral role in keeping our schools open. Thank you PTO for spearheading the initiative to honor all employees in District 31. And thank you to our custodial staff for providing safe and clean campuses for our students and staff!
Updated Travel Guidance
The Cook County Department of Public Health confirmed this afternoon that they are aligned with joint guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health and Illinois State Board of Education, which states “The CDC’s guidance for schools is that in-person learning is a priority. Thus, school-aged children who are not fully vaccinated and must travel do not need to stay home and self-quarantine after travel; they should continue to attend school in-person.” Please see below for the most up-to-date information about travel (accurate as of 4:30 p.m. on October 1, 2021).
School Exclusion Update from IDPH
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has made changes to their COVID-19 Exclusion from School guidance. As such, we have a few changes to our current return to school policy. The most notable change being that a doctor’s note alone cannot clear a student without a negative PCR COVID-19 test (antigen or rapid are not allowed for this purpose). View District 31’s updated Quarantine Information here.
PTO Family Movie Night
The early bird discounted rate has been extended through today (Friday, October 1) for Family Movie Night registration. Please register and learn more here.
School Lunch Update
Quest food service is ready to begin serving free daily lunches for all students starting on Monday, October 4. However, the free weekly breakfasts are on hold while we await further guidance from the federal program administrators and building principals will share details once it is approved.. If you missed the information about this program, please review the message sent out earlier this week.
Strategic Plan Highlights
Last week we began sharing the first of our five goals to help us meet the mission and vision of District 31. This week we will share the second goal of our strategic plan about a supportive learning environment. District 31 will foster a healthy climate & culture that creates an environment where rigorous, relevant, engaging & equitable learning experiences meet the needs of all learners. In order to meet that goal, the strategic plan includes three strategies.
- We will implement specific district-wide structures, processes, monitoring tools, & expectations for student goal setting.
- We will create innovative opportunities for student-centered learning that ensures engagement & agency (student voice and choice) through exploration of their passions & interactions with problem-based, real-world applications.
- And we will foster a sense of belonging to address diversity, equity & inclusion across all settings.
Message from District 225 to Glenview/Northbrook Families
To help support the safety and security of all of our students and visitors, middle school/elementary students must be accompanied by a parent when attending District 225 home athletic events. We would expect that parents remain at the game to help supervise their children. Students will not be able to enter the event without a parent or guardian.
PTO Directory Spot
The PTO's updated Directory Spot will be available soon! Directory Spot is an app you can download on your tablet or smartphone that includes contact information for all district families (names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails). Directory Spot can also be accessed from your computer at www.directoryspot.net. Access to Directory Spot is an exclusive benefit of PTO membership.
New Users: You will receive an email with directions on how to access the Directory Spot app. The email will come directly from Directory Spot, so please check your spam folders.

Curriculum and Instruction Update
As the new Science Coordinator, Concetta Caringella’s main goal is to make science as engaging as possible for students. To do this, she is using TCi (K-5)/IQWST (6-8) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as a foundation for the curriculum, while also bringing in evidence-based instructional strategies, multicultural/diverse texts and videos, and as many hands-on experiences as possible. Most recently, 5th graders transformed into scientists and dissected owl pellets!
