Art Enrichment, Mystery Readers, Banned Book Week, Travel Guidance, Parent/Teacher Conferences, Flu Shot and Vaccine Reminder, Strategic Plan Highlights, and More
October 8, 2021
Dear District 31 Community,
One of the most exciting things about this fall is seeing our PTO deploy its art enrichment program in the classrooms and welcoming parents into the building as mystery readers. The excitement of our students at seeing their parents---and the joy of our parents at being present in the classroom--is contagious and a reminder of the impact of the school-family partnership. Thank you for working with us as we continue on the road towards normalcy.
This week we want to give a shoutout to our school librarians, Mrs. Fisher and Mrs Cerniglia, for shining the light on “Banned Book Week,” in cooperation with the American Library Association. This week promotes the shared love of reading while also teaching about censorship and critical thinking. We are thrilled to see students once again enjoying our school libraries and checking out books.
Just a reminder that students have no school on Monday, October 11 in order for staff to participate in a Teacher Institute Day. See you tonight at the PTO Family Movie Night (weather pending)!
Dr. Erin K. Murphy
Superintendent of Schools
The CDC, CCDPH, and IDPH’s guidance for schools is that in-person learning is a priority. Thus, school-aged children who are not fully vaccinated and must travel do not need to stay home and self-quarantine after travel; they should continue to attend school in-person.” Please see below for the most up-to-date information about travel.
Parent-teacher conferences begin next week! Field conferences take place Monday, October 11 and Thursday, October 14. Winkelman conferences take place Thursday, October 14 and Monday, October 18. If you have not already, please sign up via Skyward or contact your school office for assistance. We look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with our parents.
Get Vaccinated! Flu Shot and COVID-19 Vaccine and Booster Shot Reminder
The Flu Vaccine and COVID-19 Vaccine protect you and your loved ones from serious illness and complications. If you have not already, please schedule your Flu Vaccine and, if eligible, your COVID-19 Vaccine or Vaccine Booster.

Strategic Plan Highlights
This week we highlight the third goal of our strategic plan about professional practices and shared leadership. District 31 will cultivate a supportive & positive learning environment where collaborative structures & processes are used to ensure shared leadership, professional growth & data-based decision making. In order to meet that goal, the strategic plan includes two strategies.
- Utilize the systematic process in which we work together interdependently (Professional Learning Communities) to promote trust, positive change, collaboration, & commitment.
- Provide targeted, on-going, and differentiated professional learning opportunities that provide educators with innovative & practical applications.

Pest Control Treatment
On Monday, October 11, a pest control treatment will be applied for the control of ants at Winkelman Elementary School. The material applied will be Alpine WSG Water Soluble Granule Insecticide (EPA reg#499-561). This is a non-student attendance day.

Curriculum and Instruction Update
A lot of exciting things have been happening in the District 31 math classrooms this year. Grades K-3 are implementing a new program as a complement to the curriculum. This program, “Number Corner” by Bridges, features daily twenty-minute workouts that provide skill practice as well as ongoing encounters with broader mathematical concepts that are meaningfully layered throughout the school year. Grades 4-5 are in their second year of piloting "Dreambox", a digital math program which also serves to complement our math curriculum. Field Middle School is fortunate to have added some new faces to the math department this year and each has brought a wealth of experience, enthusiasm, and expertise. Finally, we are looking forward to an upcoming book study that several D31 teachers will be participating in this year on "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K-12" by Peter Liljedahl. Please ask your children what they learned in math today!
Connect 31 Parent Education Opportunities
This week, Erin Kranz, an instructional coach at True North, shares an Inclusion Practices video on the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) offered at District 31. View the helpful video here.
