World Kindness Day Book Drive, Vaccine Information, Family Reading Challenge, Calendar Survey, Parent Education Opportunities, and More

November 12, 2021

Dear District 31 Community,

It’s World Kindness Day tomorrow!  What a wonderful opportunity to pause during this month of gratitude to remember the importance of kindness.  You can put that kindness into action this weekend by stopping by the PTO kindness event at Winkelman from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.  Make sure you bring non-perishable foods and books to contribute.  Get more details below!

Another way we celebrate World Kindness Day is by getting vaccinated.  It has been exciting to see so many pictures and to have students share about their appointments over the last week. Students are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their SECOND shot.  We ask that families send a picture/copy of the vaccine card after the second shot to the school nurse. Once students are two weeks past their second shot, they will no longer participate in the weekly Shield Illinois COVID-19 testing.  If you are still interested in a November vaccination appointment, please check out the opportunities below for November 18 and November 22. If students get the first shot before Thanksgiving, then they will have the second shot completed before winter break!

Finally, families have an opportunity to share kindness by reading together.  Our school librarians, Karrie Fisher and Kristie Cerniglia, are challenging our school community (parents, staff, and students) to read 20,000 minutes next week to commemorate Family Reading Week. I have already selected a new book to read and my son and I plan to get some more chapters under our belt in our current Harry Potter book.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Erin K. Murphy
Superintendent of Schools

Curriculum and Instruction Update
Social Studies cultivates skills such as questioning, creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking, collaborating, investigating, analyzing, comparing and contrasting, and understanding cause and effect. The Illinois Social Studies (Social Science) standards include four disciplines:  civics, economics/financial literacy, geography, and history.  Woven into the standards is the concept of INQUIRY.  Inquiry feeds into our students’ natural curiosity.  The goal of inquiry is to provide students with opportunities to ask questions, evaluate resources, draw conclusions, and take action related to what they are learning about.  As the Illinois State Board of Education explains, the goal of Social Studies instruction should be that students "emerge with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary to be informed and effective citizens," and this is what we hope to do in our Social Studies classrooms!
