Upcoming Winter Break, Caring Corner, SHIELD Testing and Vaccination Reminders, Career Day Volunteers Needed, Summer School, Parent Ed Opportunities, Curriculum and Instruction Updates, and Upcoming Events

December 10, 2021

Dear District 31 Community,

It is hard to believe that we are going into our last week of school before winter break.  We appreciate the PTO, parents, and teachers who collaborated to make this week a celebration as we end 2021. And indeed, there is much to celebrate especially as more and more students are reaching fully vaccinated status and we continue to hear laughter and the sounds of learning ringing throughout both of our buildings.

District 31 community members in need may continue to pick up groceries and personal care items at the District Office Caring Corner, 3131 Techny Rd. until 8 p.m. any night.  Winter coats are also available during school hours.

Just a reminder that there is no school next Friday, December 17, 2021.  The teachers will be participating in a Teacher Institute Day in order to be prepared to welcome your students back in 2022.

Superintendent of Schools

Shield Testing and Vaccination Reminders

  • Please remember to send a picture/ copy of your child’s vaccine card to the school nurse after they receive their second shot. Students are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second shot.
  • We were also notified last week that vaccinated individuals may continue to opt into the weekly Shield Testing.  If you would like your child to continue with the weekly testing once they become fully vaccinated or if they are currently fully vaccinated, please email your school nurse. Unless we  hear from you, we will assume that your vaccinated student will not be participating in weekly Shield testing. Unvaccinated student participation in the testing program will continue without interruption. Winkelman Nurse -  Field Nurse -
  • Shield Illinois has changed the third party company that will be providing testing services for District 31.  Passport Health will be supporting our testing process instead of Visit Healthcare. However, due to the change in companies, combined with a decreased number of students participating in testing (because they are nearing fully vaccinated status), the following changes will be made to the testing program.
  • Winkelman’s testing date will now be WEDNESDAY morning and be managed by Passport Health.
  • The Winkelman PM (afternoon) Little Wildcat students will be tested on Tuesday afternoon. Samples will be collected by District 31 nurses and the samples will be stored until the Wednesday morning collection by Passport Health. At that point they will be processed.
  • Field students will continue to be tested on Tuesday afternoon. Samples will be collected by District 31 nurses and the samples will be stored until the Wednesday morning collection by Passport Health. At that point they will be brought over to Winkelman and be processed.
  • Whether a student is testing on Tuesday or Wednesday, all District 31 tests will be processed together and brought to the lab on Wednesday. We anticipate results on Thursday or Friday of every week.

Career Day Volunteers Needed
Field Middle School Career Day will take place Friday, March 11 from  8:20 a.m. - 11:20 a.m. and Field needs members within the community involved in demonstrating potential careers.

Volunteers are needed to present their career to multiple groups in 20-30 minute time slots throughout the morning. The goal is to be as interactive as possible, not just a presentation but more of a workshop geared towards 6th-8th graders.

If you need help thinking of ways to make your information interactive, we have teachers that are willing to collaborate with you. Our hope is to represent a broad range of professions that require varying levels of education.

If this is something that you are interested in, please fill out the survey here and Assistant Principal Mr. Cooper will be in contact with you.

Winkelman students participate in five co-curricular classes: art, library, music, physical education, and STEM. Co-curriculars enhance the core academic curriculum by providing students opportunities to develop and pursue talents and interests outside of academics.  Information about the units of study and standards used in each of these classes are in the process of being added to our curriculum webpage.
