COVID Communication Updates, Little Wildcat Preschool Spots Available, Parent Education Opportunities, Curriculum and Instruction Update, and Upcoming Events
January 14, 2022
Dear District 31 Community,
Parents have received several emails this week regarding COVID-related communication including positive cases, PCR At-Home Testing, updated isolation and quarantine guidelines, and Booster Opportunities. Although we wish this wasn’t the core of our communication, we are celebrating our strength as a community.
This week we celebrate our partnership with Ravinia Health to offer PCR test kits with laboratory analysis for any staff member or student who wishes to test at home. This opportunity allows us to provide two tests a week for students, which is in line with recommendations District 31 received from the Cook County Department of Public Health during this surge. Our incredibly talented Field Middle School students put together an art gallery (pictured below). The PTO continues to put together creative events to bring the community together with their upcoming virtual Magical Math Night. We also celebrate our continuing community-wide efforts to provide in-person learning for our students and families.
Please monitor your student’s health closely and if your student is not feeling well, please do not come to school. Also, please support and reinforce adherence to the recommended mitigation strategies. The health and safety of our students and staff, and our ability to remain open to in-person learning, are dependent on our collective commitment and effort. Feel free to reach out to your school nurse, principal, or myself if you have any questions.
Please remember there is no school Monday in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Have a wonderful weekend!
Dr. Erin K. Murphy
Superintendent of Schools
PCR At-Home Testing Clarification
District 31 has partnered with Ravinia Health to offer weekly PCR test kits with laboratory analysis for students who wish to test at home. Tests will be sent home Thursday (pending availability) to all students who are opted in to Shield testing. The tests should be returned the next day. This test is an additional opportunity for families that allows the district to provide two weekly tests as recommended by CCDPH due to the increased positivity rate in the community; one at school with Shield and one at home with Ravinia Health. Participating students can choose to administer the screening in their nose or their mouth. Families will receive an email from O'Hare Clinical Lab when the results are available with instructions on how to access results. Learn more about the at-home testing program here.

Curriculum and Instruction Update
The adoption of "Number Corner" to supplement the math curriculum in grades K-3 this year has proven to be a big hit with students and teachers alike. This program consists of daily twenty-minute math workouts that incorporate and layer the focus standards throughout the year. Students are really excited about the program and the teachers are reporting that their students are grasping concepts more deeply and mastering skills more easily than ever before. Next year, the program will be added for fourth and fifth grades as well.
Please click on the following links for an overview of the "Number Corner" program at each grade: Kindergarten Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3. The photos provide a snapshot of the "Number Corner" in a Winkelman classroom from each of the four grade levels implementing the program.
