5Essentials, PCR Testing, COVID Information, Registration, 2022-23 Calendar, Curriculum and Instruction Update, Summer School Registration, and Important Dates
January 28, 2022
Dear District 31 Community,
Parents, teachers, and students across Illinois have an opportunity to participate in the statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. Our District needs your participation! This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of our schools. As a parent, this opportunity allows you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness. Please complete the survey at https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/* by March 11, 2022
*Search “Field School” and “Henry Winkelman Elem School”
Take a screenshot or photo of your completed survey and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org for a chance to win a gift card from a local restaurant. Winners will be announced weekly.
The Illinois State Board of Education’s Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
- Effective Leaders
- Collaborative Teachers
- Involved Families
- Supportive Environments
- Ambitious Instruction
Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.
Your participation in the parent portion of the survey helps us better understand the conditions at our schools and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses are completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. Students in 4th-8th grade will also take the survey. Their responses are also anonymous. If you prefer for your child not to participate, please contact your building principal.
For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view previous years’ Reports, please visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at email@example.com or contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
We have again sent students home with Ravinia Health PCR tests. You may now return these tests to school on Friday OR Monday for processing. All tests must arrive before noon on Friday or Monday in order to be sent to the lab. If your student returns the test on Friday, the sample must be collected on Thursday or Friday morning. If your student returns the test on Monday, the sample must be collected on Sunday or Monday morning. Please also note that we were informed by Ravina that they are transitioning to new processing labs and email results may come from a new company.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Curriculum and Instruction Update
Our winter benchmarking has just been completed. We are so proud of the hard work of our students! Teachers, administrators, and other staff will begin reviewing data to determine what adjustments need to be made to instruction and curriculum in order to support student achievement and growth. Parents are important partners in supporting student learning so assessment results will be posted online in Skyward later this week. As a reminder, assessment results will no longer be mailed home. This change makes the results accessible quickly while saving on resources used for the mailing. Click here to view a video demonstrating how to access the results. If you have questions about your child's learning and progress, please contact the classroom teacher.
