Dear District 31 Community,
Earlier today we shared a communication outlining the reduced mitigation plan, which includes a move to a mask strongly recommended environment on Monday, March 7, approved by the Board of Education last night. You can read that message here.
Also, at the school board meeting, the Board of Education unanimously approved a one year extension to the teacher collective bargaining agreement. Board president, Dr. Allison Slade Rothstein shared, “We are pleased to approve a contract that is fiscally responsible for District 31 but more importantly recognizes the incredible work of our teachers over the last two years. Approving this contract paves the way for the future as we work together to meet District 31’s mission of Empowering Every Student.”
Next week, staff at Field and Winkelman will focus on teaching kindness, empathy and respect for choices. At the same time, we understand that reducing mitigations is not the only thing on the minds of many of our students and their families as they grapple with events in Ukraine and the impact on family and friends. Please reach out to a social worker or administrator if you need support. We also have resources available here to help guide conversations with your children.
Throughout all of these changes and challenges, we appreciate your partnership and collaboration.
Dr. Erin K. Murphy
Superintendent of Schools
Congratulations to this week’s winner of a gift card, Vedika Kheradiya! For a chance to win a gift card and help our schools, please remember to complete the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, take a screenshot or photo of your completed survey, and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org. Winners will be announced weekly. The survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of our schools. As a parent, this opportunity allows you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness. Please complete the survey at https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/* by March 11, 2022.

Help Us Plan for the 2022-2023 School Year

Curriculum and Instruction Update
One thing we often think about when we hear “Social Studies” are the fun places we can visit to learn about cool landmarks and important people, places, and events in history. Taking “field trips” outside of school is a great way to introduce your child to some of these. Did you know that they can even be done virtually? The important thing about field trips is not just going somewhere, it’s the discussion that happens before, during, and after the trip. Here are some things you can ask after you visit somewhere together…
- What did you notice about this place?
- What are the TOP 3 most interesting things you learned?
- What would you like to learn more about?
Here is a link to some amazing virtual trips that you can take together with your child: https://www.weareteachers.com/best-virtual-field-trips/.
Even if you don’t go somewhere exciting, remember that when you’re going to the grocery store, to the library, or even making dinner, talking with your child about what you’re doing and what you’re seeing is a great way to promote vocabulary development.
