Spring Break, 5Essentials Survey, Park District Camps, Parent Engagement Committee, Registration, Vaccination Reminder, and More

Dear District 31 Community,
Spring break is on the horizon and we hope that translates into some well-deserved time off for our students and staff. As a layer of precaution for those who may be traveling or spending time with extended family and friends, we will be sending home optional COVID-19 tests with students on March 18. These tests can be taken Thursday, March 24 or the morning of Friday, March 25 and must be dropped off on Friday, March 25 before noon at the District 31 administrative offices (3131 Techny) in order to be processed over the weekend. If you don’t typically receive a kit and would like to ensure you get one, please contact one of our school nurses.
Thank you to the Field Student Council for collecting donations this week for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which is providing relief for children who are refugees from the ongoing military action in Ukraine.
Congratulations to the Field Wind Ensemble led by band director Mike Miller for receiving a perfect score at the Illinois Grade School Music Association District Band Contest on Saturday! At the contest, bands play selections for three judges who rate the ensembles on their technical skill and musicianship. For the 21st consecutive year the Field Wind Ensemble received a perfect score from all 3 judges. They were the only band at the contest site to receive this honor.
Congratulations also to all of our Winkelman Battle of the Books participants! 93 students joined the battle, read 14 books, and played their best. This was a huge accomplishment for everyone who played! A big thank you to our Library Media Specialist Karrie Fisher for her hard work putting the battle together and congratulations to our top three teams Talons of Books, Smart Smarties, and Popping Potatoes.

FINAL DAY! 5Essentials Survey
This is the FINAL DAY to participate in the 5Essentials Survey. Congratulations to our District 31 families for hitting the required response rate to receive a summary report that will help us improve our school effectiveness! Though we have hit our required response rate, we are still looking to increase our rate further!

Spring Days Off Camp Offered by the Northbrook Park District
The Northbrook Park District offers days off camps for the days students may not be in school. Some of these camps are even offered at Winkelman. You can register for the camps here. You do NOT need to be a Northbrook resident to take advantage of these camps.
Important Information from the Northbrook Park District Regarding Changes to the 2022-23 Adventure Campus Program
Registration for the 2022-23 Adventure Campus program began this week. Families should take note of significant changes to the enrollment process.
- A reduction in the number of students initially enrolled.
- Introduction of a lottery system to align the number of students enrolled with the number of staff hired. Parents will be notified of initial status the week of April 18. A lottery system will be instituted with the number of students limited at each site based on the current employment levels. Once registration is full, waitlists will be formed and accommodated as soon as staff are hired to meet the standards set at each location.
These changes are being made due to staffing challenges. Despite full-time staff support, rigorous recruitment, changes to wages, and added benefits, the Park District has been unable to garner the number of applicants needed to fill the part-time positions for the program. Families who turn in registration forms by April 8 at 5pm will be prioritized by the number of days per week they are registering for with 5 days being the highest priority, then 4, then 3. The initial enrollment will be limited. At Winkelman, capacity will start at 30 students per day based on the number of part-time staff we have currently. The initial enrollment number is the same at all school sites. In relation to the current school year, this equates to 10-20 fewer students per day, a number that is substantially lower than pre-pandemic years. Join the Parent Engagement Committee!
District 31 is looking for parents who are interested in serving on the Parent Engagement Committee. The Parent Engagement Committee provides important input and feedback on District 31 communication and outreach including district-wide emails, newsletters, social media, and website content to increase parent engagement. The first task of the parent engagement committee will be to provide feedback on the District’s website and assist in decisions related to the upcoming website redesign.
If you are interested in participating in the committee, please email your interest to firstname.lastname@example.org. The first meeting will take place in April. Meetings are anticipated to be in the evenings via Zoom.
Help Us Plan for the 2022-2023 School Year
As we plan for next year, please let us know whether you intend to register your child for school in District 31 even if you haven't completed registration. This helps the administration plan for class sections and programs. Please complete this survey for your current preschool through 7th grade student. Formal registration begins on March 1 for grades 1st - 8th. Please login to Skyward and complete this brief survey by March 25. Registration for the 2022 - 2023 School Year
Registration for the 2022 - 2023 school year is underway for all students. New students should call the district office to prove residency and to get Infosnap information. Registration for 1st - 8th grade students will begin Tuesday, March 1. Returning students will have registration information emailed or mailed to their home. If you have any registration questions, you may stop by the District Office between 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Friday. If you cannot come during the scheduled times, please call 847-313-4416 to schedule an appointment.

We continue to encourage all eligible individuals to get vaccinated for COVID-19. Once vaccinated, please notify the school of your student’s vaccination status by sending a photo of the vaccination card to your school nurse.

Curriculum and Instruction Update
Document-based questions, also known as DBQs, are an important part of 6-8 Social Studies at Field! Our middle schoolers write essays using their own knowledge of historical events, learned throughout the duration of a unit of study, and evidence from primary source documents. DBQs are a critical thinking activity that integrate the Common Core’s Writing History standards, historical thinking skills, and inquiry.

Eric Garcia began writing about autism because he was frustrated by the media’s coverage of it and realized he needed to put into writing what so many autistic people have been saying for years: Autism is a part of their identity; they don’t need to be fixed. In We’re Not Broken, Garcia uses his own life as a springboard to discuss the social and policy gaps that exist in supporting those on the spectrum. He explores how autistic people wrestle with systems – from education to health care – that were not built with them in mind.
