Dear District 31 Community,

As we move into May, our District 31 Covid numbers are seeing a steady increase, reflecting that of our greater community. You can review our dashboard here.  Please continue to review your mitigation strategies with your child/ren (washing hands, social distancing, masking) and do not send your child to school if they are not feeling well.  As covid numbers increase across Cook County and we transition to a medium community transmission status, masks are recommended indoors.

On a lighter note, we celebrated our extraordinary teachers with fun treats throughout the week in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you PTO for celebrating our teachers and staff. I am very grateful for our special team of teachers and staff who work tirelessly to support our students and families with passion, flexibility, and grace. Thank you to everyone who showed their appreciation for our teachers this week!

Last Friday, we celebrated our cultural diversity with an exciting new event, Around the World Fun with District 31. Thank you to the PTO and our participating District 31 families for putting together a very special event! Photos of the event are posted on our Facebook page.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Exceptional Children’s Week Kindness Challenge. We are so proud to be an inclusive, kind, and understanding community!

Lastly, congratulations to the Field Wind Ensemble for their amazing  performance at the University of Illinois SuperState Band Festival this morning. The performance can be viewed here.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Curriculum and Instruction Update
Listening and speaking are important skills to nurture in our students. District 31’s goal is for students to engage in conversations where they can build on others’ ideas as well as add their own ideas. Try having conversations with your child about what you are watching on TV or about current events to help build listening and speaking skills at home. Practice having them acknowledge and respond to your thoughts and ideas as well as including their own. Another idea is to share stories about yourself, your family, or even a made-up story. Include lots of details and enthusiasm when you tell your story. Ask your child to share their own stories (real or made-up).

Viewing is also a critical skill as we must notice and interpret many visual images each day. Practice thinking about the meaning and purpose of different ads, videos, infographics, with your child that you see in your daily life.

Literacy skills in school are taught so students can be successful outside of the classroom. The District wants students to be able to understand, analyze, critique, and ask questions when needed.
