Winkelman Leadership Structure Change for the 2022-2023 School Year

As the countdown to summer begins, it is time to turn our eyes to the 2022-2023 school year.  Beginning next year, Winkelman’s leadership structure will evolve to provide targeted support and programming for our primary (pre-K-2nd grade) and intermediate (3rd-5th grade) students by moving to a co-principal model. Ms. Shaton Wolverton will be the lead principal for our primary program, while Mr. Nino Alvarez will serve as the lead principal for the intermediate program.

We recognize and celebrate the unique needs and learning profiles of our primary students and intermediate students. Our primary students have never had a “normal” year of school during these years they are building their foundational academic and school skills. Our intermediate students, also impacted by pandemic learning during their formative years, are building the skills and knowledge to transition to middle school. It is our desire to ensure that we are meeting the distinctive needs of our primary and intermediate students and the staff that work with them, while still building consistency and stability for our elementary students and staff.

Winkelman will remain one school with one identity, and have two leaders that are available and visible to all staff, students, and parents.  However, our two co-principals will provide for specific support and instructional leadership for students and staff at either the primary or  intermediate level.

Over the next few weeks there will be several opportunities for our parents to learn about the vision of Winkelman school for the upcoming school year, as well as learn about some of the logistics related to this change.

  • Ms. Wolverton and Mr. Alvarez will be sharing the vision of Winkelman school at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, April 19 at 7 p.m.  Use this link to attend remotely.

  • Parent Tea --- Ms. Wolverton and Mr. Alvarez invite parents to a parent tea on May 10 (primary families - 6 p.m., intermediate families at 7 p.m.)  More details will be emailed on April 20.

Over the last two years, we have been proud of all that Winkelman has accomplished educating students during a pandemic.  As normalcy emerges, we are excited to have two excellent and familiar leaders who will allow us to continue to provide a world-class education that empowers all students academically and socially, Pre-K through 5th grade. The future is bright indeed.

Sincerely,

Dr. Erin K. Murphy
